Fly Tying Tools

Build a fly tying bench around the tools you need

Set up the hook and materials first

Choose a vise for the bench and the hooks you use. Then list what the first pattern needs for thread, feathers and other materials. Most cased hand-tool kits here cover tools only. Add the vise and pattern supplies separately.

Choose core tools for a bare bench

The Loon Core contains the all-purpose bobbin and scissors, bodkin, hackle pliers and whip finisher. The Kingfisher Intro covers thread setup with a bobbin and threader, plus basic scissors and finishing tools. Compare the exact contents against the gaps in your own setup.

Choose expansion tools for a working bench

The Loon Accessory adds a spinner, tweezers, brush and medium stacker plus a Vise Pawn. The Kingfisher Comprehensive combines two scissor profiles with a spinner and stacker. Choose based on which jobs you want to add, and check what the case actually holds.

Guide questions

Do I need every tool in a starter kit for the first pattern?

Start from that pattern’s steps. A simple fly may need only a few core tools, while a hair or dubbing pattern can justify a specialized tool.
