Choosing threaders and bench needles

Check the actual tube opening

A wire loop and its thread need to travel through the same opening. Choose the working end for the tube you own. Stonfo identifies its Elite Size 1 for small tubes and offers a separate size for wider passages.

Choose the working end for the job

A flexible loop can pull thread through a bobbin. A rigid needle can reach one spot on a fly. If you also use a half hitch, a combination tool can save one reach across the bench.

Choose a handle you can find again

A colored grip is easy to distinguish from a plain needle. A flat or hexagonal side can help the threader stay where you put it. Compare those features only after the working end fits.

Department questions

Can I force a loop through a fine ceramic tube?

Choose a narrower threader if the loop and thread bind. A tool that passes freely makes it easier to retrieve the thread without bending the loop.

Is a tippet threader the same as a bobbin threader?

A tippet threader passes line through the eye of a finished fly. Choose a tool made for the bobbin tube when setting up your tying thread.

When does a half-hitch end help?

Choose it if you already use that knot and want one tool for setup and finishing. A wire whip finisher is for a different knot.
